Voting Taking Place from 9am to 8pm for April 3 Re and By-Elections

The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced that voting will take place for the April 3 re and by elections from 6am to 8pm and voters must go to their registered polling station to vote. 

 

The details are as follows: 

 

• When a voter goes to a polling station, they must take a form of identification such as a resident registration card, a driver''s license, and a passport or any ID with a photo that has been issued by a government office or a public organization.

 

• Voters can check the location of their polling station of the voting information that was delivered to their home address or they can use the ‘find my polling station’ function on the ‘Election Information’ mobile application in the election statistics system menu.

 

• Those persons that are allowed to carry out election campaigning can even campaign on election day through the internet, by electronic mail, text message or on social networking sites. 

 

• In addition, you can post a picture showing you voted including the candidate number you voted for or it is also possible to make a post or send a message that encourages people to support, recommend people to vote for or to show an objection to a particular political party or candidate.

 

• Candidates are allowed to send recorded telephone messages of themselves (including ARS) encouraging voters to participate in voting as long as it does not include content that encourages people to support, recommend people to vote for or to show an objection to a particular political party or candidate.

 

• However, it is prohibited to take a picture inside the polling booth, damage the ballot or ballot paper or to encourage voters to participate in voting within 100 meters of the polling station. 

 

• The NEC encourages all eligible voters to participate in voting after examining the candidates’ policies and pledges in the election material sent to the voters home address or uploaded on the NEC policy and pledges website. 

 

Early voting for these elections was already held on March 29 and 30, and the NEC announced the turnout results with 58,854 of the 409,566 eligible voters participating, recording an early voting turnout of 14.37%. 

 

The relevant Gu/Si/Gun Election Commissions will now store the early voting ballot boxes securely in a location where CCTV is installed until election day. They will also establish monitoring facilities to check the status of the ballot boxes in real time.
