Candidate Registration for the Re and By-Elections to be Held on April 3 Complete, Average of 4 Candidates per Elected Position

The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced that the result of candidate registration for the re and by-elections to be held on April 3, with 20 candidates registered in the 5 constituencies, at an average of four candidates per election position. 

 

The details are as follows: 

 

• In elections for two seats in the National Assembly, an average of five candidates per seat registered. In the election for the Seongsan-gu Changwon-si constituency member seat seven candidates were registered, and in the election for the Goseong-gun, South Gyeongsang Province constituency member seat three candidates registered. 

 

• In the three elections for members of three different Gu/Si/Gun councils, a total of 10 candidates registered at an average of 3.3 candidates per election seat. 

 

• Information on the candidates for these re and by-elections including their property history, military service, income and property tax over the last five years, comprehensive real estate tax payment and any arrears, criminal record, educational background, career and past candidate registration information can be found on the NEC’s website (http://www.nec.go.kr).

 

• The NEC will post election posters submitted by the candidates around the electoral districts by March 22. Also, the NEC will send out election bulletins that include the candidates’ property details, military service, tax payments and criminal record among other information will be sent to each household by March 24 along with the voting information.

 

• Campaigning can be undertaken from March 21 to April 2, the day before election day.

 

In addition, the voter’s list will be open to viewing and editing from March 17 (Sunday) to March 19 (Tuesday) and will be finalized on March 22 (Friday).

 

• Voters or stakeholders can view the voters list at Eup/Myeon officers or Dong citizen centers in the district where the election is conducted, or it is possible to view the voters list on the relevant Gu/Si/Gun office homepage. 

 

* It is possible to visit the offices even on public holidays to view the voter’s list from 9am to 6pm. If viewing online via the relevant homepage, it is only possible for voters to view their own information. 

 

• If a voter is missing or a voter’s details are wrong, or if there is a disqualified voter on the voters list, a stakeholder may appeal to the relevant Gu/Si/Gun office during the period the voters list is open.

 

• The NEC requested that if a person is not on the voters list they should check to make sure they would not be able to vote incorrectly. ​
