NEC Opens Korean Women’s Political Citizenship College

The National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea (NEC) announced that it has opened the first Korean Women''s Political Citizenship University, which was set up this year to expand political participation by women, and has said it will hold a total of 16 weeks of education beginning with the inauguration ceremony on November 15.

The Korean Women''s Political Citizenship College will hold a training course that focuses on passing on the capacity and expertise required for aspiring female politicians in advance of the local elections next year. The NEC is working together with the Dongguk University, Ehwa Women’s University, the Korea Women Voters Federation, the Korean Women’s Association and the Korea Women’s Council. 

At the inauguration ceremony held at the ECC Theatre at Ehwa Women’s University, NEC Vice Chairperson Moon Sang-boo said "Korea has achieved democratic development with the remarkable economic development since its independence, but women''s political participation has not yet followed this economic development." He went on to say “through the Korean Women''s Political Citizenship College, many women are expected to advance onto the political stage such as in the National Assembly and local councils, and to take a step forward in the development of democracy in Korea."

Students from Korean Women''s Political Citizenship College will conduct field training until February next year such as communicative learning and community service activities focusing on the area of public service ethics in elections, democracy, local administration, local finance and anti-corruption fields.
