‘Great Voter’s Debate'' Held in line with 5th Voter’s Day

Vibrant discussion on the topic ‘The 20th National Assembly the Voters Want’ held between representatives from parties, society, the media and voters

The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea hosted the Great Voter’s Debate on May 12 on the occasion of the 5th Voter’s Day at the Korean Press Center.

The debate, held under the title of The 20th National Assembly the Voters Want, gave various voices, such as representatives from parties, societies, the media and voters, a platform for participants to discuss election culture and political development.

In his introductory remarks, the Chairperson of the National Election Broadcasting Debate Commission (NEBDC) Choi Eun-soo said that “through this Great Voter’s Debate,’’ I hope we can reach a consensus on various voices from all walks of life and agendas that voters want, which will serve as a foundation for policies and laws that parties lay out.”

In addition, through his congratulatory remarks, the Vice Chairperson on the NEC Moon Sang-boo stated that “today’s debate is a meaningful and future-oriented event ahead of the opening of the 20th National Assembly to try and redefine the meaning of elections. He also said “I hope this is an opportunity for everyone to actively voice out various opinions on what the voters want and what the National Assembly and politicians do and how they do it.”

NEBDC Commissioner Oh Mi-yeong oversaw the proceedings as emcee, and the Chairperson of the Korean Association of Electoral Studies Lee Hyeon-woo said through his presentation that “if the National Assembly-elect do not forget the mindset of going together with the voters that they have shown during the two-week campaign period, they will become successful members of the National Assembly and gain the trust of the voters.”

Also, other participants in the vibrant debate included one National Assembly-elect from the four parties (the Saenuri Party, the Minjoo Party of Korea, the People’s Party and the Justice Party), the Kwanhun Club, the Korean League of Women Voters and winners from the National Student Debates Competition.

The NEBDC announced that during the debate 100 participants including parties, people from various fields and voters, were able to gather in one place to talk about the ambition of and what the voters wanted from the 20th National Assembly, and also that the debate was a meaningful venue to discuss future hopes for the new National Assembly.
