Public Statement Released by the NEC Chairperson

The National Election Commission released a public statement by its Chairperson Lee In-Bok on May 14, the day before the commencement of candidate registration for the 6th Nationwide Local Elections.

 

The statement includes the following:

Ÿ   The upcoming local elections are significant because representatives of local residents are elected in these elections who will lead local development and educational policies. Interest and participation in the forthcoming local elections will therefore contribute to establishing the basic of a nation.

 

Ÿ   Voters are encouraged to select the best candidate and political party by thoroughly considering their policies and pledges on security, environment, education, etc. for themselves, their families and the local community.

 

Ÿ   In particular, early voting is introduced for the first time in the upcoming local elections. Voters not able to vote on election day, therefore, are kindly requested to participate in early voting for 2 days from May 30 to 31.

 

Ÿ   The Election Commission will manage the forthcoming local elections in a fair manner and take strict action against electoral offences. The Election Commission will also do its best to live up to the people’s expectation by increasing voters’ participation in voting, providing more election information-related services, enhancing transparency of election, etc.

 

Ÿ   In addition, public officials are strongly requested to remain politically impartial while the media is encouraged to provide voters with right information through accurate and fair news coverage. Political parties and candidates are also encouraged to compete in a fair manner based on achievable policies.
