Missouri Secretary of State visits the National Election Commission

Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander visited the National Election Commission on July 30, the repeat/by-elections day to explore the election system in Korea, including early voting, etc.


In the meeting with NEC Deputy Secretary General Kim Yong-Hi, he recognized the excellence of the early voting system and the political fund system in Korea. He also highly praised efforts by the NEC to increase conveniences for voters such as the introduction of early voting, etc.

Missouri is currently one of the 15 states where early voting has not been implemented and Secretary of State Jason Kander has constantly promoted the introduction of early voting since his inauguration in 2013.

Secretary of State Jason Kander said that he was impressed with Korea having achieved full democracy over a short period of time and that Korea’s achievement served as a good practice for emerging democracies.

NEC Deputy Secretary General Kim Yong-Hi who is also Secretary General of Association of World Election Bodies explained the purpose of the launch of A-WEB – to share with countries around the world Korea’s experience of development of democracy, while asking for active role and support from the US including the state of Missouri. Secretary of State Jason Kander promised his full support.  

Meanwhile, early voting conducted in the repeat/by-elections as well as in the recent June 4 local elections was highly acclaimed by electoral officials from each country who participated in the Election Visitor Program for its convenience and function as a system to increase voters’ participation. The participants of the Election Visitor Program chose the integrated voters’ list system and early voting using the ballot printer, etc. as those they wished most to introduce in their countries.
