The Korean Civic Education Institute for Democracy (KOCEI) hosted the 12th Political Camp for Future Leaders at the International Youth Center Youth Hostel from July 20 to 22.

This camp, which was attended by 98 high school students from around the country, including heads of student council recommended by school principles, began the  program with presentations on policies devised by the students about ‘conflict resolution between teachers and students in the classroom.’

The original policies proposed by the students, who were set into five groups, reflected the students’ viewpoint and included creating a tri-rules and regulations committee made up of students, parents and teachers, designating a ‘month of communication,’ hosting a forum between students and teachers to exchange ideas, producing a ‘communications radio’ and opening an ‘administrative court card’ system.

In addition, a debate was held regarding the policies presented by the students, and students had the time to experience a democratic decision making process by voting to decide the most outstanding policy. Alongside this debate, there were various programs through which the future political leaders had a chance to develop their vision, including a lecture from GiTae Park, the President of the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea, and politics-related field trips.

KOCEI announced that it hopes the students that participated in this camp will nurture a proper sense of democratic civic consciousness as a member of society and had a good opportunity to foster their sense of future leadership.

The Political Camp for Future Leaders has been run by KOCEI since 2005 in order to foster the next generation of political leaders with democratic values. Graduated students from the camp maintain consistent relationships among one another though various activities, including holding regular meetings and pursuing self-developed projects. In August, KOCEI will be inviting Japanese university students and holding a joint meeting between Korean and Japanese university students.
