= Topic: Democratic Civic Education as a Foundation for Building a Social Consensus = 

The Korean Civic Education Institute for Democracy (KOCEI) successfully closed the 12th International Symposium on Civic Education that was held on September 29 and 30 with participation from international and domestic officials seeking a new direction for civic education for democracy. 

This symposium, which has been held every year since 2005 and was created to enhance international exchange and cooperation regarding civic education for democracy, was held for the 12th time and this year the topic was Democratic Civic Education as a Foundation for Building a Social Consensus. Experts from Korea and from the highest countries on the Democracy Index scale (Norway, New Zealand and Germany) participated in in-depth discussions held on suggestions for the direction to advance civic education for democracy in Korea. 

This symposium was composed of three sessions, and during each session experts presented on the relevant topic followed by a discussion. The three sessions were:

• German reunification and civic education for democracy.

• The norms of democracy and civic education for democracy in Norway.

• Representative democracy and civic education for democracy in New Zealand.

KOCEI announced that it will continue to make efforts to contribute to the revitalization of civic education for democracy and the development of democracy as an expert institution through studying current trends and various examples in the discussed countries during this debate.
