Standing Commissioner, Dr. Kyung Keun KANG’s Visit to India

Standing Commissioner, Dr. Kyung Keun KANG visited India to attend Indian Election Commission(ECI)’s
Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at Vigyan Bhavan Centre in New Delhi on January 25, 2010. At the
ceremony, President Patil of India delivered a congratulatory speech and introduced commemorative
stamps for the 60th anniversary of the Election Commission of India.


Dr. KANG was also invited to the Republic Day Parade on January 26, 2010 where President Myeong
Bak LEE of Republic of Korea was hosted as the chief guest. The Republic Day commemorates the
date when the Constitution of India came into force and India became a true sovereign state. After
the parade, Dr. KANG paid a courtesy call on Indian President Patil and held a conversation with Korean
President LEE on the Indian Republic Day.


On January 27, an international symposium on “Sharing Best Electoral Practices” was held as part of
the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. More than 50 delegates from various election management bodies
in 30 countries including Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, the UK and the US attended the
Symposium and shared their views and experiences on electoral practices. Dr. KANG gave a presentation on
“Educating the Youth for Political Participation and Sustainable Democracy” and had a discussion on the issues
