The NEC held a meeting to coordinate overseas voting policies with relevant government branches on December 13. NEC’s Secretary General Lee, Jong-woo presided over the meeting, participated by high-ranking officials from six governmental bodies including Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Public Administration and Security, Ministry of National Defense, and Korea Post. Participants reviewed the results of mock overseas voting, and discussed the problems found and how to address them. Major topics covered for consideration are as follows: ·Various processes of overseas voter registration. ·Lengthening the period of reporting as overseas absentees and applying for overseas voter registration. ·Installation of more voting stations and introduction of partial mail-in voting ·Various means of voter identification In addition, as it is currently difficult to respond actively to electoral law violations committed abroad under the current criminal law system, there was discussion on what legislative move should be made to secure fairness in overseas voting. ※ Overseas voting is scheduled to be held for the first time in the 19th National Assembly elections in 2012.
