Candidate Registration Period for the 21st National Assembly Elections Closed, Average of 4.4 Candidates per Seat for Constituency Members

= 35 Political parties registered candidates in elections for proportional representation members, the ballot paper will be 48.1cm in length  = 

 

The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced the close of candidate registration for the 21st National Assembly elections, with 1,118 candidates from 21 political parties registering for elections for constituency members at an average of 4.4 candidates per seat. Also 312 candidates registered for elections for proportional representation members from 35 political parties.

 

Three of the 38 political parties (the Christian Party, the Korean National Party, and the Hannara Party) that applied to register candidates elections for proportional representation members for were not accepted under Article 49 (8) of the Public Official Election Act on grounds such as either a person who does not have the legitimate right to have applied to register with a political party or the political party did not submit the required documents. 

 

Therefore the NEC announced the ballot papers for elections for proportional representation members will be 48.1cm in length, with 35 political parties registering candidates. 

 

In addition, for the re and by-elections to be held together with the 21st National Assembly elections, 25 candidates registered in 8 elections for heads of local governments, 44 candidates registered for 17 Si/Do council member elections and 86 candidates registered for Gu/Si/Gun council member elections. 

 

Candidates'' property status, military service history, criminal record, academic background, tax history and public official election history will be published until election day on the NEC election data system (http://info.nec.go.kr). The election pledges submitted by political parties and candidates will be sent to people’s homes together with voting information on April 5.
