The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced that it will manage entrusted elections for the President of the World Taekwondo Headquarters (Kukkiwon) on October 11. Accordingly, an information session was held at the World Taekwondo Headquarters (Seoul Gangnam-gu) from 2pm on September 18. This information session was conducted to include a briefing and a question and answer session, including on preparations for candidate registration and campaign methods for the World Taekwondo Headquarters presidential elections, being held for the first time.

In the past, the Chairperson on the Board of Directors appointed the President of the World Taekwondo Headquarters from among the Directors, but in July the Board of Directors revised the Article of Association and requested the NEC to manage the election through a more transparent and fair process.

Candidate registration was from two days from September 30 to October 1 and the electorate consists of taekwondo officials both from Korea and abroad as outlined in the World Taekwondo Headquarters Presidential election regulations.

The NEC plans to operate a resident task force within the World Taekwondo Headquarters to crack down on illegal activities such as the provision of money and goods and participation in election activities by executives and staff from the organization.

An official from the NEC said that ‘we will manage this election fairly and accurately in accordance with relevant laws and the articles of the World Taekwondo Headquarters’ and urged stakeholders to strictly abide by relevant laws to establish a clean election culture that meets the high level of interest in these elections being shown by those that are involved in taekwondo around the world.
