NEC to Enhance Cooperation with Twitter Ahead of the 7th Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections

The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea held a two-day meeting with a representative from Twitter from April 17 and decided to strengthen mutual cooperation. 

 

This meeting was attended by relevant officials from the NEC, including Chief Planning and Coordination Officer Kim Sehwan, and Philip Chua, Public Policy Manager and global lead for Twitter’s Government and Elections Team, to discuss major issues. 

 

Among the major issues discussed were Twitter’s participation in the NEC’s promotional activities to increase voter turnout, measures to provide election information to voters to make voting convenient, and the prevention of and enforcement against malicious or false propaganda

 

Chief Planning and Coordination Officer Kim Sehwan said “since Twitter has great social influence around the world, we hope that it will play a positive role in promoting democracy during the local elections by helping to create a beautiful election campaign culture.”

 

The NEC also said that it will “continue to make efforts to promote voter participation and create a sound election cyber culture through close cooperation with portal sites including social media organizations.
